Company Culture
Here at Parity we pride ourselves on being an open source company. We build open source software and operate in the open with all code and issue management. Many people have asked us, āWhat is it like to work at Parity?ā, and in this post I want to talk about our engineering culture and how we do things. We havenāt invented anything new or discovered some revolutionary productivity enhancer. Weāre operating on the open source model as so many other projects do, but the devil is in the details, and weāre continually refining and improving the way we work. If I had to put a label on it, Iād say we loosely follow the Programmer Anarchy methodology as defined by Fred George.
How do we work?
Parity has over 60 employees at the time of writing this post. This is quite a lot, but weāre still a very lean operation and try to get by with as few people as we think we can. Core to our culture and philosophy of operation is autonomy, people should be free to choose to work on what they want to work on. There are obviously boundariesāif someone wants to open a banana stand theyāre likely to get a conversation from Gavin or myself saying they canāt do that and need to focus on something that forwards the mission of the company. So far no one has requested to open a banana stand.
In essence, we self-organise through Github issues and chat. Being an open-source initiative, all issues are managed in the open Github Issue repository. We have no other task management or issue tracking solution, everything we work off exists in Github Issues. If someone has an idea for a feature request or something they want to work on, weāll talk about it in chat. If we decide itās something we should do, itās put into a Github Issue and self-assigned.
Day to day process
Programmer Anarchy doesnāt mean there isnāt process, but that the processes are developed by the people who will be following them. One might ask how this works in practice and if it doesnāt make it easy to have things fall between the cracks. The answer is roughly that the product owner is responsible for ensuring that this doesnāt happen. In a normal "Product Managerā role you might say that that manager is āin chargeā of the developers in a team. We donāt have any managers like that, but instead have product owners at different levels that are responsible for the end-product, these product owners are almost entirely made up of the developers who will be implementing said product, the only āpowerā they have is to lay out what needs to be done, not how or by whom.
It is the responsibility of this product owner that their product sees the right attention and that they have a good overview of everything that is going on and what needs to happen to not have anything fall between the cracks. They in turn communicate back what needs to be done through creating Github Issues or talking on chat.
Beyond this, we also follow regular best-practices, no pull request gets merged without a code review, things that are deemed critical such as code that touches anything consensus-related requires multiple reviews and from the people who have best insight into the code in question. We run Gitlab CI with CI runners on multiple platforms for all PRs to make sure our entire test-suite is always passing and master should always be in a releasable state. On top of this, we do third-party audits for particularly sensitive code.
Ethos
The general spirit of the culture at Parity Technologies is this: We hire the best people in the world and let them work on whatever they want to work on.
Sometimes we have to make compromises on this culture because we donāt have the resources or the communication structures or the managerial experience to make it 100% true (I donāt think anyone does). It is however always the goal and something we strive towards, while trying to make zero compromise on quality, oversight or productivity.
At the end of the day, Parity Technologies is all about shipping good software. We believe happy people that are passionate about what theyāre working on ship more and higher quality software.
